Diamond Mine started on a bit of a dare. In late 2015, Barry was asked to be involved in a fundraiser. On a dare he rounded up some great musicians and they tore the house down having a load of fun in the process.
The venue asked them to do another show a few months later. Word caught on and venues in other cities are asking the band to come and play.
Here's Barry's take on how this came to be:
"When I first started playing music in the '70's, of course, I played lots of cover songs to learn my craft - folk/bluegrass/old-tyme music, learning tunes by artists like the Carter Family, Jerry Jeff Walker, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Willie P., Emmylou, etc., folk rock by Young, Dylan, CSNY, The Band, etc. and on and on until I discovered heavier rock, then punk, then alternative, then back to folk and roots music. Oh boy, I've been all over the place. At some point in the late '80s, I landed on Blue Rodeo. And couldn't get enough of them. But long before that, I was writing songs and attempted to develop an artist career. Still working on that! Haha! Now they inspire my own writing."
"Once I started down the artist path, I thought I would never, ever play in a cover or tribute band, because I was focused on doing my own thing, but you know some things are just too hard to pass up! I was challenged by Rob Wigan of Stratford's newest roots music and everything music venue, Revival House, to round up a bunch of great musicians to perform Blue Rodeo songs at his Raise The Roof fundraiser and so, that's what I did!"
"Now I play in this crazy fun band called DIAMOND MINE, performing Blue Rodeo tunes. Cuddy/Keelor wrote so many great songs. I sing on the Keelor songs and I have to say, it's great fun being Greg Keelor for a night!"
We'll add shows to the list as soon as they are confirmed. So, come back often to find out where we are playing. It's truly a riot! If you are a Blue Rodeo fan, you will enjoy hearing all of their hits and some other more obscure tunes they have played throughout their amazing 30+ year career. AND I know you will have a blast, guaranteed.
